Laminack and Wadsworth (2012) have created a bullying prevention curriculum that is deeply rooted in the Common Core Standards/College and Career Readiness Anchor Standards for Reading. Through a selection of trade books to read with students, teachers can help students carefully examine the behaviors of bullies, the bullied, and the bystanders. Through a series of guided read alouds, educators can help children closely examine the characters and situations most often associated with bullying. Through read aloud experiences and conversations focused on the behaviors and motives, feelings and emotions, situations and settings portrayed in the literature, children can begin to develop understanding and insight.
Laminack and Wadsworth (2012) chose to work through a multilayered approach, examining the central themes spanning across an intentionally selected set of books. the behaviors, feelings, thoughts, and motives of characters are closely examined. Insights, thoughts, and theories are used to delve deeper, working toward generalizations and personal understandings.
The books and lessons are presented in a series of five layers. Each layer is presented in sequenced and is designed to guide students toward essential understandings.
Layer 1 ~ Getting Started: We Have So Much in Common
Layer 2 ~ Moving In: There Are Ways in Which We Are Different - Not Less Than Others, Not Better Than Others, Just Different
Layer 3 ~ Inside the Circle: Thinking, Feeling, Acting
Layer 4 ~ At The Core: When Others Are Not Thoughtful, Caring, and Kind
Layer 5 ~ Getting Focused For Action: An Opportunity to Explore the Actions of Others, Reflect on Our Own Feelings, and Redirect Our Behaviors Toward Fellow Human Beings
